Chapter Nineteen: The Crossroads

The knot in Carl’s stomach got tighter and tighter as they got closer to Memphis. Each leg of the trip: the train to Chicago, the train to Cairo, and now the steamboat that carried them down the Mississippi, brought him closer to the enemy he swore he’d kill, and perhaps to the woman he thought he’d never see again, even though he always felt he would. Elijah had grown quiet. He stood at the rail and watched intently as familiar places went by: Island No. 10, New Madrid, and then much later, Fort Pillow. Carl put his hand on the big man’s shoulder as they chugged past the steep bluff where their friend stood and fought instead of running, and died for it.

“What keeps us all from just killing one another?” Elijah said softly, staring at the bluff. “What makes someone a master and another a slave?”

“I guess it’s all some kind illusion of society…until…of course, it all breaks down and we go to war,” Carl said, trying to sound philosophical, but immediately feeling foolish instead.

“Hmm…” Elijah mused. “Maybe sometimes we need to.”

Carl looked up at his friend, suddenly aware of the great violence the gentle Elijah could be capable of. He shuddered at the thought, then felt comfort knowing he was a friend.
